VLC media player (originariamente chiamato “VideoLAN Client”) è un media player libero del progetto VideoLAN. VLC supporta nativamente la maggior parte dei codec audio e video, formati file come DVD, VCD e vari protocolli per lo streaming. I codec di tutti i formati audio e video sono presenti nel file di installazione del programma. Può essere utilizzato anche come server per trasmettere in stream, in unicast o in multicast su IPv4 o su IPv6 su un network a larga banda. Il media player impiega la libreria codec libavcodec del progetto FFmpeg per maneggiare molti dei formati supportati ed utilizza la libreria di decriptazione DVD libdvdcss per gestire i playback dei DVD cifrati.
VLC è un media player disponibile su un elevato numero di piattaforme; esistono infatti versioni per GNU/Linux, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, BSD, Pocket PC e Solaris.
